The Darker Side of Fiction was my third large-scale, multi-author book-signing/convention and it was the best so far. I’ve got the bug. My next stop is the UK Horror Convention in Sheffield next May.
I cannot commend Jo and Rachel from Hourglass Promotions highly enough. Their care and preparation made me feel like a movie star and the writers, readers and bloggers I met were all beautiful people.
Signings are not without their issues. I spent more than twice what I made from this one, but I see part of being an indie author as investing in my future. The connections and friendships I made at the event are priceless.
I got to rub shoulders with the likes of Claire Riley and Paula Acton and I revelled in my fan-girl moments. I took nowhere near the amount of photos I intended to take, so some of these are courtesy of other people at the event.
The ups – heading to the bar and immediately knowing which group of gorgeous weirdos were the writers. Hourglass staff checking regularly whether we needed water or coffee. Beautiful tables and people everywhere. Fantastic atmosphere at the ball, elegant gowns, and spooky décor. Selling lots of books, especially copies of my lesser known urban fantasy – The Ballerina and the Revolutionary. Coming home with lots of other authors’ books to read and review over the next few months.
The downs – my daughter couldn’t make it. Struggling home with two suitcases full of unsold books and a backpack of clothes with two cancelled trains and a two hour delay (I do get to claim back for the price of the tickets though, so that’s a positive). The hotel and rooms were too hot, except when you stood in the wrong place and it was suddenly too cold. It was a fucking expensive endeavour.
And so to the photos:
