The Perfect Mini Break

... or how to be happy with the moments you can grab.

My partner and I managed our first break away since we moved in together, four years ago. We treated ourselves to an overnight stay in a town 30 miles to the west. Travelled there by bus with a small backpack and a satchel between us. And it was bliss. Twenty eight hours with no work, no kids, no cats and no internet.

We booked a room in a Victorian hotel by the river. The room had a four poster bed. We felt like royalty (so working class are we). We had lunch in a pub, where they served vegan fish and chips, and dinner at an amazing Thai restaurant where we ordered a spicy papaya salad and green curry. On the way back to the hotel we met a hedgehog and we even watched Horror channel together in bed with a mini bottle of pinot noir.

Got into Elgin Cathedral for free with my staff pass. Some seriously narrow and steep spiral staircases almost toppled me a couple of times, but I prevailed and the view from the top (and the wind) took our breaths away.

Twenty years ago a holiday would have involved flying somewhere for at least a week, but one day alone and together, chatting, playing and laughing, was perfect.
