I received an exciting gift this Christmas. A second-hand digital SLR. My plan is to learn and experiment with one of the manual functions each week until (hopefully) I achieve some wonderful results. This is my starting point - a photograph of my cat in front of the unlit Christmas tree without altering any of the settings (using the automatic portrait function). It's wobbly - hard to tell if the cat was moving or I was. I hope within five or six weeks to be able to get a stunning photo of her. Black cats are tricky to photograph.
